AC Running But Blowing Warm Air? 6 Causes (and What You Can Check Yourself)
It’s the most frustrating version of AC failure: the system is clearly running — you can hear it — but the air coming out of the vents is warm. Before you call anyone, here are the causes, in order of “check this first.”
1. Thermostat settings (seriously, check this first)
Make sure it’s set to Cool, not Fan. On Fan, the blower circulates air without cooling it — which feels exactly like “AC blowing warm air.” Also check that the set temperature is actually below the room temperature. This sounds obvious, but it accounts for a surprising share of service calls, especially in homes with new smart thermostats after a schedule or mode got changed.
2. A badly clogged air filter
A choked filter starves the system of airflow. The coil gets too cold, ices over, and suddenly warm air is bypassing a block of ice. If you can’t remember the last time you changed the filter, change it now. In Burbank, where summer dust and wildfire-season particulates load filters faster than the “every 90 days” rule assumes, monthly checks during summer are smart.
3. Frozen evaporator coil
Related to the above: if you see frost or ice on the refrigerant lines, or the indoor unit is sweating heavily, turn the system off (fan-only is fine) and let it thaw for a few hours. An iced coil can’t cool. If it re-freezes after thawing and a fresh filter, the cause is likely low refrigerant — that’s a technician visit.
4. The outdoor unit isn’t running
Go check the condenser outside. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is silent or just humming, you likely have a failed capacitor or contactor — the most common AC repair there is, and a fast fix for a technician. If the outdoor fan spins when you look but the air still isn’t cold, the compressor may not be engaging.

5. Low refrigerant (a leak)
Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” — if it’s low, it leaked. Symptoms: weak cooling that’s gradually gotten worse over weeks, ice on the lines, or a hissing sound at the unit. This is not a DIY item; it requires a licensed technician to find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system.
6. Ductwork problems
If some rooms get cool air and others get warm air, the AC may be fine and the ducts may be the problem — disconnected or crushed ducts in the attic dump your cold air where it does nothing.
